Raku Demonstration & Artist Stalls Southside Art Market

Join Ceramic Arts Queensland at the Morningside School of Arts on Sunday 2 December 2018 from 9am - 1pm, for this ever popular event.

CAQ members and volunteers will demonstrate how Raku is done from the glazing to the firing and polishing the finished pot. It will be an action-packed performance that will excite even the most experienced raku exponent.

The CAQ marquee will be displaying members' work for sale and information on upcoming events.

You can purchase your pot to glaze on the day. These pots have been thrown and bisqued by master potter, *Bill Powell. Pot shapes include vases and teabowls and the sought after "moon" shaped pot or sphere shape. Bill's pure and classic shapes make glazing easy, even for children and have been designed to be stacked allowing maximum kiln use and faster firing for the eagerly waiting participants.

Glazing tables will be set up with a wonderful choice of exciting Raku glazes and CAQ members will demonstrate how to best cover your pot. At each of the past Raku days enthusiastic children of all ages have been very keen to learn how to apply glaze to their recently purchased pots and watch in amazement as the glowing pot is pulled from the kiln.

The raku kilns will be up and firing before 9am ready to accept the glazed pots and will run consistently until 1pm when the last of the pots will be fired.

Each Raku event has sold out of pots well before then so you have to get in early!

If you have an interest in knowing how Raku is done, or picking up some tips, or even finding out how you can join the Raku volunteers for our next Raku day, then come along and join in.

Raku is the fastest way to glaze and fire ceramic work, using special clay and an immediate heating process.  Spectacular results are achieved from the sudden heating and cooling, with or without exposure to a smoking chamber.  Beautiful iridescent and lustrous surfaces are possible with the option to reglaze and refire as the whole cycle takes about 40 minutes.

It’s always a thrill to see the unexpected and unique results that inevitably happen from this spontaneous form of firing.
